Basic health advice

Chest Pain
Speedy action is needed for heart problems. If pain is severe, or moderate and lasts more than five minutes, call 999 as first priority.

Temperatures in children
High temperatures are undesirable up to the age of 7. Two measures can be taken:

1. Paracetamol (Calpol) in full dose
2. Remove most clothing and bedding

Rashes in children
Any rash that can be felt with a finger tip or whose colour disappears when it is pressed is most unlikely to be serious. Telephone doctor for advice if unsure.

Nose bleeds
Sit forward. Squeeze the soft part of the nose (below the bone) firmly between thumb and forefinger. Hold for 10 - 15 minutes. Do not blow nose. Do not squeeze the bone - this does not stop the bleeding.

Diarrhoea
Otherwise known as gastroenteritis. Fluids are the only thing that matters. Food is not important. Offer small amounts of fluid frequently. Bloody diarrhoea is a cause for concern - contact your doctor. The same advice applies to all ages. Breastfed babies should continue to be breastfed during the illness.

Colds and sore throats
A cold will not respond to antibiotics. Although most sore throats do not respond to antibiotics, a very red throat or obvious tonsillitis may well respond. If you think you have tonsillitis please attend surgery.

Emergency contraception
Can be used up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. The earlier the better. This service is also available via certain local pharmacies.
